Daruma manju by Shumin

A square shaped manju with rounded corners and domed reverse. Carved in high relief with Daruma clutching a nyoi (sceptre). The background carved with cloud shaped reserves with diaper patterns. Asymmetrical himotoshi to the reverse.

Signed: Shumin (Shumin II). Tokyo. Last half of the 19th Century.

The Shumin studios bread and butter model was Daruma, carved in the katabori (round carving) style. Manju by the studio are rare.
