A heavy wood bokuto, lacquered with a mechanical-manzai (entertainer) mask, a lacquered and carved Yakko-kite (Samurai servant) on a spool and a kneeling doll. Sparse sprigs of plum are also lacquered to the surface.
Interestingly, in 1640 Tokugawa Iyemitsu barred the Yakko carrying a sword. Presumably, the bokuto would have been this lowly retainers alternative self defence device.
46cm.
