Sennin

A marine tooth netsuke, carved as a witch-like hybrid of Gama and Tobosaku Sennin.

The carving is finely executed, with crisp detailing now gently softened by age and handling. Over time, the material has developed a rich, mellow patina with a highly polished surface.

Extensive research has been undertaken into this work, revealing that it is by the same hand responsible for the monumental Sozuka no Baba offered in the second Betty Jahss Collection sale at Sotheby's (14 November 1991, Lot 120), where it realised one of the highest prices of the auction.

We have identified numerous other works attributable to this carver or studio and have prepared a paper presenting our findings. Please follow the link.
